An Introduction

Every child has the right to education and All children can learn but not in the same way or at the same pace. Research has shown that approximately10-12% of the population could have a learning difficulty. This means, in a class of 40, there could be 4-5 children with this condition. The govt. aims at education for all. Thus it requires that all schools adopt requisite measures to ensure that all students enrolled benefit from the education being provided by them. All affiliating boards and authorities have been instructed by the govt. to ensure that schools under their control provide appropriate support and facilities, so that no student lags behind. This has lead to setting up Learning Centers in the schools to cater to the special needs of those who are finding it difficult to cope with the regular teaching in the classroom

A few institutions who take their social responsibility seriously are opening to reach out to the diverse needs of all the children in the classrooms. Our school is one such institution which is specially committed to this cause for spreading awareness and ensuring that help is at hand to all those children who might be in need of it. It has set up a Learning Centre in the campus to Help children with learning difficulties One of our steady endeavors has remained to help each and every child enrolled in the school to achieve in accordance with his potential. We work to remove all/ any gaps between potential and performance

Remember that some children learn in a different way. Specialized teaching is necessary to learn, to overcome learning difficulties and to cope with mainstream school A Learning Centre is a separate special education classroom in a regular school where some students facing educational difficulties, receive direct, specialized instruction and academic remediation and assistance with homework and related assignments as individuals or in small groups. These classrooms are staffed by special education teachers and sometimes educational assistants. Special education teachers in a resource room focus on particular goals as mandated by an Individualized Education Program and remediate general education curriculum. Some programs emphasize the development of special skills, including homework completion and behavior. Depending on individual needs, students usually attend resource rooms three to five times per week for about forty five minutes per day. Some research has suggested these classrooms are of particular benefit to students with language-based learning difficulties.

School Counselors or the Centre Heads help to make learning a positive experience for every student. They are sensitive to individual differences. They know that a classroom environment that is good for one child is not necessarily good for another. Counselors facilitate communication among teachers, parents, administrators, and students to adapt the school's environment in the best interests of each individual student. They help individual students make the most of their school experiences and prepare them for the future. With the help of teachers, the guidance program provides a caring atmosphere which enables students to develop emotionally, socially and academically. In addition, the guidance program offers various services to enhance the quality of our students' school experience. Some of the services include individual counseling, Intervention and Referral Services.

Prevention versus remediation. A growing trend in the field of counseling is the focus on prevention instead of remediation. In the past it was not uncommon for counselors to have interactions with students only after some crisis had occurred. There is now a shift for school counselors to intercede prior to any incidents and to become more proactive in developing and enacting school wide prevention plans
Counselors use interviews, counseling sessions, tests, or other methods in evaluating and advising students. School counselors observe younger children during classroom and play activities and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate the children’s strengths, problems, or special needs. They also help students develop good study habits.
School counselors at all levels help students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems.

These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur and to enhance the student’s personal, social, and academic growth.
